3B NEWSLETTER for June 9-12, 2008

On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday there are 12:30 p.m. DISMISSALS with aftercare.  Thursday is the last day of school with a liturgy in the morning and dismissal at 11:00 a.m. with NO AFTERCARE.  Summer camp begins on Tuesday, June 17.

It has been a pleasure getting to know your children this year.  I have enjoyed watching them grow both spiritually and academically.  I will miss them next year.  They are a great bunch of kids!

I want to thank you for all the cooperation and support you gave me throughout the year.  Please continue that support this summer by considering the following suggestions.

A.   Math

1.    Please purchase math flash cards for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts.  The students need to know these facts for next year.

2.    Please make sure that your child can tell time well—not just on a digital watch but analog also.  Ask your child to read the clock often.

B.   Reading

1.    Have your child read everyday.  Books, newspaper, magazines, or anything else will do.  It is extremely important that your child read orally for about 15 minutes 4-5 days a week.  Encourage your child to read the punctuation.  They should read with feeling.  Reading frequently will help with fluency.

2.    Also, test your child to see if he/she understands what has been read.  To be successful, your child must be able to read fluently, and understand what he/she is reading.

3.    VERY IMPORTANT—please take time to listen to your child read orally.  Don’t make it a chore, though, but an enjoyable time together.

C.   Writing

1.    Have your child keep a journal.  Each day, your child can make an entry about something interesting that happened or something interesting that was seen.  Maybe your child will just write a poem or a short story.  Your child can also draw a picture to go with his/her writing.

2.    After reading a story, your child may write in a double entry journal (this was done in their reading journal this year), and/or write a summary.

3.    Students will be required to write in cursive beginning in November for 4th grade.  They should practice cursive this summer.

D.   There are many stores in the area that have learning aids.  A very good book to purchase, which reviews skills learned in 3rd grade, is Summer Bridge Activities (the one for 3rd grade to 4th grade).   This book may be purchased at area bookstores.  Barnes & Nobles have them and if they are out of stock will order them for you.

It is extremely important that your child continue to work on reading, writing, and math skills over the summer.  Thank you again for your support.

Have a WONDERFUL summer!
